Épinettes and Batignolles districts

Walk around the site with our guide Sandra

From Epinettes to Batignolles, yesterday and today :

It was the Épinettes field that gave its name to this neighborhood, which until the early 19th century was nothing more than a vast expanse of cultivated land.until the beginning of the 19th century, was a vast expanse of cultivated land punctuated here and there by open quarry holes on the lower slopes of the Butte Montmartre: little by little, until 1850, small-scale industries were established in the district, which gradually became lined with workers' and craftsmen's cottages.

To the north of Monceau, the Batignolles district began to develop during the First Empire, with the construction of small country houses with small gardens, followed by large apartment blocks for even more modest people. Away from the hustle and bustle of the capital's tourist districts, this singular neighborhood is a true haven of peace, with its surprisingly aristocratic Cité des Fleurs.

The impressive Clichy-Batignolles project, which has given rise to a 54-hectare urban development project in place of former SNCF railway wasteland, bears witness to the dynamism of this district, which is developing around the new Palais de Justice designed by Renzo Piano.
